Happy August and Black Business Month!
After a year away in Paris, I am so delighted to be back in the Boston area to continue our work together to close the racial wealth gap. As summer winds down, the CLTV team is very excited to be planning several in-person and virtual events and opportunities for our community. We are also busy welcoming new Intensive Workshop participants to cohorts starting in October.
Read on to learn how you can participate in, engage with, and support our work in August and beyond.
Friday, October 6 @ 11 am - 1 pm at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center (invitations and more details coming soon)
We invite our community members to kick off BECMA’s Mass Black Expo with an early afternoon reception! We are excited to meet in person and reconnect with old friends, build new connections, and continue to take action to close the racial wealth gap.
During the reception, Nicole Obi and Julia Johannsen will speak briefly about the Impact Collective’s partnership with BECMA and our shared goal to advance the economic wellbeing of Black people in Massachusetts. This event is open to all Impact Collective community members: partners, friends, champions, workshop alumni, current participants, and family members.
We encourage our community to attend the Mass Black Expo before and after the reception. The three-day expo will showcase the diversity, breadth, capacity, innovation, brilliance, and resilience of Black businesses and professionals across the Commonwealth.
What is the connection between identity, wealth, and wellbeing?
Katya Smyth has explored the right to wellbeing for people and communities during her long career as an advocate and activist. In this workshop, you will learn about wellbeing, mapping your wellbeing assets, and uncovering how your life experiences—including your participation in the Impact Collective—have shifted access to wellbeing for yourself and others.
You’ll leave this in-person workshop with an actionable understanding of the intersection of identity, wellbeing, and wealth that can help you navigate a new perspective, guide your work to address structural racism, and make a durable impact. This workshop is open only to alumni and those interested in participating in the Intensive Workshop.
In May, Ethan Kerr from Breaking the Mold joined CLTV5 as a guest speaker exploring the intersection of patriarchy and wealth-related decision-making. Ethan’s session with CTLV5 was so powerful that we are bringing him back for all our alumni to be able to participate in this important conversation! This event is open only to Intensive Workshop alumni.

We are still recruiting for fall cohorts for the Intensive Workshop! We have received multiple nominations, completed several applicant interviews, and registrations are rolling in. Let’s keep up the work! Help us by taking the following actions to refer women in your network to us:
Alumni and staff from the Impact Collective attended the WOCCON 2023 Boston Road Show event this past month! We are so grateful to our community for attending the convening of inclusion-minded investors, allies, and policymakers. Together, we brainstormed how to leverage our collective energy and resources to propel women of color entrepreneurs farther and faster on their journey to entrepreneurial success.
"It was truly inspiring, and importantly, their 'asks' of us were not only for investments. They need introductions to tech talent, potential partners, content area specialists, and board advisors. They need access to decision-makers, marketing advice, and connections with mentors.”
In August, some members of CLTV5 enjoyed a delicious meal with Julia and Workshop facilitators, Liz and Susan, atComfort Kitchenin Dorchester, MA.
As participants learn during the Intensive Workshop, how and where we spend our money reflects what is important to us. Spending money at Black-owned businesses helps close the racial wealth gap. The Impact Collective encourages you to go out of your way this August to spend your money in support of Black entrepreneurs.
Not sure where to find businesses to support? Black OwnedBoston has already created a directory of over 1,600+ Black-owned businesses in the city! We encourage you to use and share this resource with your community.
Summer Reading: Rich White Men by Garrett Neiman
Congratulations to Garrett Neiman! His latest book, Rich White Men, was released at the end of June. It provides a data-driven policy blueprint for transforming America’s power structure to be more equitable and beneficial for everyone, including wealthy white men. We at the Impact Collective understand the role rich white men play in power structures that uphold the racial wealth gap and how critical policy is in driving changes to those structures. We highly recommend this book to our entire community!
